POSITION DETAILS

Summary: 

College for Social Innovation (CFSI) and its 13 college and university partners -- in partnership with more than 100 Boston anti-poverty non-profits -- propose to engage four (4) VISTA members to build capacity and new partnerships needed to dramatically expand the Semester in the City (SITC) experiential education program and thereby build capacity and a bigger, better prepared, and more diverse talent pipeline for Boston’s leading anti-poverty and social justice organizations.  The four VISTAs (Recruitment, Marketing, Program Support, and Internships) will work closely with each other.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Program Support VISTA will work with the Program team to support the Semester in the City Fellows, with a particular focus on low-income, first-generation fellows. The Program Support VISTA will be responsible for creating a variety of resources to support our Fellows and ensure they are getting the most out of their experience interning in Boston. This position will involve working closely with the Program Team and Fellows to help build capacity for the program and improve the quality of the SITC experience for everyone. Responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Create, expand, and support affordable food resources to make sure all the Fellows, in particular low-income members of the cohort, have access to healthy food at an affordable price
  • Source and publish resources for Fellows that allow them to better navigate the program, including a weekly newsletter, group texting platform, and online student handbook to centralize information and resources
  • Support student success by collaborating with the Director of Experiential Learning to implement a new Learning Management System that is easier for students to use and helps us to monitor student progress and performance around the core curriculum (internships and courses). Develop and implement auxiliary programs that support student success outside of their internship and coursework, including things such as peer mentoring, small group support teams, and post college career launch, by working with the Program Team and Community Advisors (three peer leaders for each semester)
  • Source and publish for Fellows a post-pandemic guide to visit Boston’s cultural resources for free or at a low-cost, engage fellows in a series of outings based on the guide


QUALIFICATIONS & MINDSETS

  • Strong organizational and research skills, excellent with details and follow-up
  • Interest and experience in coaching and supporting students with a solution and customer service orientation
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, communication skills with the ability to connect with people
  • Bachelor’s Degree and relevant experience with relationship building, recruitment and/or systems building
  • This position can be completed virtually if COVID-19 continues to make in-person work unsafe
  • As part of service, the AmeriCorps member will participate in training and professional development with fellow AmeriCorps members serving at other Campus Compact VISTA projects. Roughly 10-15 percent of the member’s time will be devoted to professional development

TERMS OF AMERICORPS VISTA SERVICE

  • AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to a 12 month, full-time placement
  • Additional outside employment is permitted with approval from the host site supervisor and CCSNE program staff. Outside employment must not interfere with VISTA service
  • A VISTA member is allowed to attend class(es) part-time as long as their studies do not interfere with their VISTA responsibilities. VISTA members must receive approval from host site supervisors before enrolling in courses.
  • The Hatch Act applies to VISTA members at all times during their service, including certain activities during their off-duty hours. A VISTA is prohibited from engaging in any form of political activity (either partisan or nonpartisan) during their years of service. Click here to learn more about the Hatch Act.

STIPEND AND BENEFITS PROVIDED BY AMERICORPS AND CAMPUS COMPACT 

  • Bi-weekly living allowance of $1,027.88
  • End of service award* (AmeriCorps member must choose one of two options)
    • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($6,345)
    • End-of-Service Cash Stipend ($1,803.10)
  • Relocation stipend for candidates moving more than 50 miles ($750)
  • Healthcare benefits (AmeriCorps member must choose one of two options)
    • Healthcare allowance for out-of-pocket expenses 
    • Basic healthcare coverage
  • 10 Days Personal Leave
  • 10 Days Sick Leave
  • Child care assistance for children under 13 years of age**
  • Student loan forbearance or deferment (depending on lender)

College for Social Innovation (CFSI) brings together colleges and social sector organizations to create fully-credited experiential learning opportunities that are meaningful, accessible, and life-changing. Our college students, referred to as Social Innovation Fellows, build skills, a digital portfolio, and a professional network that helps to position them to become the next generation of problem solvers for humanity’s tough challenges. Students are placed in a semester-long internship (400 hours) and also take skill-building and reflection classes twice a week as part of a diverse “Semester in the City” cohort.

College for Social Innovation recently completed a three-year pilot of its Semester in the City program, having enrolled 193 students from six colleges and universities and achieved strong initial results. We now have 13 college partners and are looking to further build an innovative and unique educational experience that can add value for students and their home colleges while building a bigger, better, and more diverse talent pipeline for the social sector.

In the next four to five years, we look to create a nationally recognized curriculum and instructional delivery model that generates strong results while growing to serve 500+ students per year and piloting growth beyond Boston. Ultimately, we aim to build a movement to make it common for millions of college students -- representing the full diversity of the nation -- to gain access to careers in the fast-growing social sector. During their Semester in the City, Fellows participate in well-structured and academically-accredited internships where they learn from real-world experiences, build relationships with mentors, and build personal, professional and academic skills.
