Campus Compact AmeriCorps Member – Recruitment VISTA

POSITION DETAILS

Summary: 

College for Social Innovation (CFSI) and its 13 college and university partners -- in partnership with more than 100 Boston anti-poverty non-profits -- will engage an AmeriCorps member to build capacity and new partnerships needed to dramatically expand the Semester in the City (SITC) experiential education program and thereby build capacity and a bigger, better prepared, and more diverse talent pipeline for Boston’s leading anti-poverty and social justice organizations. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recruitment VISTA will develop educational and budget workshops and build partnerships with college success organizations to help low-income college students prepare for successful careers through career workshops and by gaining access to proven high-impact learning opportunities, including the “Semester in the City” program. Responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Support recruiting and admissions efforts at high-need campus partner colleges with a focus on low-income students and students of color. Develop strategies and materials based on this support to inform best practices on improving yield and providing better access to high-impact learning programs like Semester in the City for marginalized students. Pilot materials and strategies on at least 2 partner campuses with a high percentage of marginalized students
  • Design, develop, and pilot in-person information and skill-building nights for low-income students, including Semester in the City alumni, enrolled at three or more of College for Social Innovation’s partner colleges. The information and skill-building sessions will include coaching on development or polishing of resumes and LinkedIn profiles, as well as cover letters and coaching on informational interviewing and networking; train student ambassadors to lead workshops based on feedback from in-person pilot sessions
  • Conduct research on the benefits of high-impact learning opportunities and on the challenges of access to such programs as they relate to marginalized college students, with a focus on low-income students and students of color. Share insights from research with the Marketing Team to design recruitment materials that highlight this information to students and partners
  • Develop an interactive student expense workbook and budgeting template to share with incoming and prospective Pell-eligible students through coaching sessions


QUALIFICATIONS & MINDSETS

  • Strong organizational and research skills, excellent with details and follow-up 
  • Interest and experience in coaching and supporting students with a solution and customer service orientation
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, communication skills with ability to connect with people 
  • Bachelor’s Degree and relevant experience with relationship building, recruitment and/or systems building
  • This position can be completed virtually if COVID-19 continues to make in-person work unsafe
  • As part of service, the AmeriCorps member will participate in training and professional development with fellow AmeriCorps members serving at other Campus Compact VISTA projects. Roughly 10-15 percent of the member’s time will be devoted to professional development 

TERMS OF AMERICORPS VISTA SERVICE

  • AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to a 12 month, full-time placement
  • Additional outside employment is permitted with approval from the host site supervisor and CCSNE program staff. Outside employment must not interfere with VISTA service
  • A VISTA member is allowed to attend class(es) part-time as long as their studies do not interfere with their VISTA responsibilities. VISTA members must receive approval from host site supervisors before enrolling in courses.
  • The Hatch Act applies to VISTA members at all times during their service, including certain activities during their off-duty hours. A VISTA is prohibited from engaging in any form of political activity (either partisan or nonpartisan) during their years of service. Click here to learn more about the Hatch Act.

STIPEND AND BENEFITS PROVIDED BY AMERICORPS AND CAMPUS COMPACT 

  • Bi-weekly living allowance of $1,027.88
  • End of service award* (AmeriCorps member must choose one of two options)
    • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($6,345)
    • End-of-Service Cash Stipend ($1,803.10)
  • Relocation stipend for candidates moving more than 50 miles ($750)
  • Healthcare benefits (AmeriCorps member must choose one of two options)
    • Healthcare allowance for out-of-pocket expenses 
    • Basic healthcare coverage
  • 10 Days Personal Leave
  • 10 Days Sick Leave
  • Child care assistance for children under 13 years of age**
  • Student loan forbearance or deferment (depending on lender)

College for Social Innovation (CFSI) brings together colleges and social sector organizations to create fully-credited experiential learning opportunities that are meaningful, accessible, and life-changing. Our college students, referred to as Social Innovation Fellows, build skills, a digital portfolio, and a professional network that helps to position them to become the next generation of problem solvers for humanity’s tough challenges. Students are placed in a semester-long internship (400 hours) and also take skill-building and reflection classes twice a week as part of a diverse “Semester in the City” cohort.

College for Social Innovation recently completed a three-year pilot of its Semester in the City program, having enrolled 193 students from six colleges and universities and achieved strong initial results. We now have 13 college partners and are looking to further build an innovative and unique educational experience that can add value for students and their home colleges while building a bigger, better, and more diverse talent pipeline for the social sector.

In the next four to five years, we look to create a nationally recognized curriculum and instructional delivery model that generates strong results while growing to serve 500+ students per year and piloting growth beyond Boston. Ultimately, we aim to build a movement to make it common for millions of college students -- representing the full diversity of the nation -- to gain access to careers in the fast-growing social sector. During their Semester in the City, Fellows participate in well-structured and academically-accredited internships where they learn from real-world experiences, build relationships with mentors, and build personal, professional and academic skills.
