Director of Growth & Business Planning

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Possible Project (TPP) is pursuing several exciting strategies and initiatives focused on expanding its impact, including developing and launching an Innovation Center in Boston, and refining its program to serve a larger number and broader range of students.  In pursuing these strategies and others, it will be important for TPP to be disciplined and data-driven in its decision-making, while also staying true to its core values. TPP is also growing, and evolving its model in a way that requires strong forecasting and financial modeling to maintain fiscal discipline and make informed resource decisions.  Reporting to the COO, the Director of Growth & Business Planning will be at the forefront of using a data-driven approach to support effective strategic, operational and financial planning, and ensure that TPP is deploying its resources for the highest impact. The person in this role will also manage and play a key role in important projects related to the growth and management of TPP as an organization.  

For this role, TPP is seeking a professional with strong analytical and quantitative experience, with a passion for deploying those skills to help young people and communities reach their full potential.  This is a full-time position reporting to the Chief Operating Officer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Refine, update, and strengthen TPP’s forecast model for projecting student enrollment and persistence, which drives TPP’s operational plans and budgets.  In partnership with the COO, “own” the forecast model and process, and continue to strengthen it as a critical decision-making tool for TPP.
  • Conduct financial modeling and analysis related to specific opportunities and decisions, including real-estate choices related to expansion, resource decisions and tradeoffs, fundraising opportunities, etc.
  • Refine TPP’s analytical approach to strategy and decision-making, proactively developing analytical tools and approaches to help solve problems and support decisions that arise as TPP pursues its strategy.  An example of this could be analysis of student residential data by school to prioritize what schools to pursue for partnership, or how to optimize TPP’s transportation of students to and from its Boston innovation center.
  • Develop, implement, and refine dashboards that track TPP’s progress against annual and multi-year goals, and partner with the COO and other executive leaders to build a culture of operational excellence at TPP.  
  • In partnership with the COO and in-house and contract finance staff, support the development of TPP’s annual budget, and conduct analyses to track and project performance against budgets at the organization-wide and department levels.
  • Create presentations to support critical partnership and fundraising opportunities.
  • Develop grant budgets and budget reports.
  • Generate materials for TPP’s Board of Directors related to TPP’s finances, strategy and operations.
  • Lead and support special projects and initiatives, including “focused execution teams,” comprised of TPP staff and Board members and stakeholders, that are focused on launching TPP’s Boston innovation center and associated entrepreneurial ecosystem.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep quantitative and analytical experience, including at least five years of experience conducting quantitative analysis at a consulting firm, in-house finance department at a business or nonprofit, or a similar environment
  • Demonstrated history of working discretely with sensitive information, including compensation data, and organization and business/operational unit-level finances
  • Experience as an employee or volunteer at a direct-service, youth-serving nonprofit organization a strong plus
  • MBA preferred, but not required

CRITICAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to synthesize complex data into clear and concise communications
  • Must be a “quick study,” able to quickly understand concepts and get traction against challenges
  • Project planning and management experience
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills
  • Process and detail orientation
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor

ABOUT THE POSSIBLE PROJECT

For the past eight years, The Possible Project  has built, implemented, assessed and refined a model for after-school programming that provides high school students in Cambridge and Boston with an opportunity to: a) create and take products to market, b) partner with local businesses for real-work design and business operations projects, c) have access to industry and professional mentors who can help hone their skills and grow their access to networks of supportive adults, and d) receive pathways counseling for post-secondary opportunities.

Through our program, students have the opportunity to dream up, design and create real products for sale in our cutting edge Makerspace and to create custom design and fabrication projects for external clients through TPP’s Made Possible enterprise.  Our impact stretches beyond the skills learned by the students who participate; we use entrepreneurship as a mechanism for bolstering creativity, fostering perseverance, harnessing optimism and revealing the possible.
