Director of Program Operations


For almost 50 years, Bridge Over Troubled Waters has provided a comprehensive continuum of care for runaway, homeless, and high-risk youth in Boston, and has been a national model in providing innovative youth services. The Director of Program Operations is a new leadership position designed in response to the growth of Bridge’s programs.  Working closely with a team of program directors and coordinators, the position will oversee staff and services and is responsible for the operational success of all of Bridge’s programs.  This collaborative leadership role will drive program strategy, develop and implement processes to optimize program effectiveness and champion a culture of high-performing teams dedicated to Bridge’s mission.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Program Operations will be a key member of the Senior Management team and will work with the organization’s leaders to drive Bridge’s continued growth.  


Program Leadership

  • Provide strategic and operational vision for Bridge programs 
  • Represent Bridge externally to community partners, funders, & government agencies

Program Management

  • Drive program results by streamlining operational systems to measure success, impact, and opportunities for learning and improvement
  • Support, build and share best practices for achieving Bridge’s goals across programs
  • Manage contracts with partner organizations to ensure that programs and clients have access to sufficient resources and services
  • Develop and implement strategies that will build capacity among program areas
  • Act as internal thought leader on program strategy adding strategic perspective to day-to-day conversations and programming decisions
  • Stay informed about local and national research on best practices in service homeless youth and grant-specific proposals

Team Management

  • Work with staff to develop objective performance measurements across programs, to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal setting for all employees
  • Identify needs for and ensure quality delivery of professional development opportunities for program staff in order to strengthen the team’s capacity to deliver the core program
  • Instill a sense of accountability among team members by modeling tight oversight of individual and organization performance standards
  • Recruit, supervise, evaluate, develop, and retain talented program team members committed to Bridge’s mission, in ways that drive optimal performance
  • Supports meetings with donors, corporate partners, and other key stakeholders, and develops all external evaluation-related communications with the Executive Director, Development & Communications staff


  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 + years of experience, with 3-5 years of relevant program leadership experience
  • Smart, strategic thinker with effective, diplomatic, and proactive leadership skills with an ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Strong communicator; able to communicate results (orally and in writing) in a clear, effective manner for various audiences (internal/external, technical/non-technical)
  • 5-7 years of relevant management experience in a growing nonprofit including supervision of at least two direct reports and experience managing other leaders
  • Ability to give feedback to staff at all levels and comfort in having one-on-one coaching conversations with staff to build skills and improve performance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications especially Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, and tools for managing/analyzing program data 
  • Sound judgment, maturity, flexibility and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion  
  • Stellar project management skills with an ability to organize and develop processes to ensure deadlines are met and goals achieved
  • Must be personable with exceptional communication skills, possess a positive attitude, demonstrate attention to detail and be capable of representing Bridge.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license required
