We seek a mission-focused, seasoned and entrepreneurial fundraising executive driven by our mandate to increase and expand philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and institutional funders. 

For 101 years, the International Institute of New England (IINE) has played a vital role in welcoming refugees and immigrants to New England. Every day we create opportunities for newcomers to achieve self-sufficiency, integrate into their new communities, and contribute to the growth of our region. We do this through a continuum of support that includes community and cultural navigation, employment assistance from first jobs to career advancement, English language classes, and a legal immigration service. We provide these critical services in field offices located in Boston and Lowell, Massachusetts, and in Manchester, New Hampshire. 

Today, the number of displaced people worldwide is at a record high, fueled by old conflicts, emerging wars, and shifting alliances. As the global migration crisis intensifies, Americans debate how open our borders should be while the federal government takes unprecedented steps to restrict immigration. In these uncertain times, our Board of Directors and staff are committed to growing our service lines and increasing our client base. In 2018, IINE launched a strategic plan to grow programming to reach 4,000 new Americans and diversify revenue streams with a combination of public, philanthropic, and low-cost, fee-based programming.  Since 2016, IINE has launched Suitcase Stories®, a storytelling program through which refugees and immigrants share their journeys with live audiences, and raised our profile through increased presence in traditional and social media. 

In 2019, IINE offered case management, English language learning, employment, skills training, and legal services to more than 2,500 people from 66 different countries, a 40% jump in clients served from the previous year. More than 1,500 refugees and immigrants enroll in our education, career training, and job placement programs annually.  Nearly 40% of our revenue is attributable to private sources.

As Chief Development Officer (CDO), your role will be to plan and execute a fundraising strategy that increases IINE’s private philanthropic support from our current level of $2M per year to $3M+ annually within the next three years. You will manage a small team, which you will have the opportunity to expand as revenue increases. 

IINE has grown fundraising from $600K to $2M in the past three years, largely through successful signature events and increases in private foundation giving.  As CDO, you will lead our effort to engage a greater number of supporters across the spectrum of philanthropic giving, including increasing individual giving, identifying and cultivating new institutional supporters, and building deeper relationships with corporate funders. 

Reporting to the President and CEO, you will build on your consistent record of success by introducing and implementing methodologies and systems that can build upon our strong foundation for fundraising.  You must enjoy and thrive on connecting with, cultivating, and generating support from donors. An ability to build relationships with high net worth individual donors and successfully solicit their support is a critical part of the Chief Development Officer’s role at IINE.

While your primary focus will be on the generation of resources to operate and grow the organization, you will also serve as a member of our Executive Team and participate in the leadership of the organization as a whole.  You will supervise a team that includes the Manager of Special Events & Corporate Relations and a Donor Management Specialist. You will partner closely with the Manager of Grants and Foundations as well as the Director of Marketing and Community Relations to ensure strong alignment across programming, communications and fundraising. 


As the Chief Development Officer, you will be responsible for the following threads of work:

  • Development Strategy + Execution: Analyze our current approach and implement a strategy to grow philanthropic support from a broader base of donors.  
  • Major Gift Donor Management: Grow and manage your own portfolio of high net worth donors and prospects, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding their support.
  • Management and Collaboration: Manage and evaluate the development staff while working collaboratively with the Chief Programming Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Director of Marketing and Community Relations to meet IINE’s fundraising goals.  
  • Systems and efficiency: Ensure that IINE’s development systems and staff work efficiently and systematically. 
  • Connecting with new sources of philanthropic support: Strategize and implement plans to increase fundraising from a broader base of support and new funders in all regions we serve, including estate gifts and an increase in direct mail support.
  • Board support and development: Support an active Board Development Committee and work with the Board of Directors and CEO to identify and cultivate new Board members.

The Chief Development Officer will be mission-focused and results-oriented; competitive in driving towards success.  You will lead with clear goals in mind and can motivate, train and inspire the development team and colleagues to meet annual and multi-year fundraising goals.  Together, we will advance our work so that refugees and immigrants can realize their dreams and contribute to New England’s growth and prosperity.

  • 10+ years of development and management experience gained in high-growth, fast-paced organizations
  • Demonstrated success raising funds from all donor sources – individuals, foundations, corporations, and community groups – with a solid track record of achievement soliciting support from individual donors
  • Experience managing and implementing all aspects of development work: events, grant writing, appeals, data analysis and management, direct mail, and legacy giving
  • Extensive management experience, including hiring, supervising and motivating staff 
  • Experience supporting and working with a Board of Directors
  • Strong analytical skills and use of data to drive fundraising, partnership decisions and forecasting
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to build, cultivate, and bring to bear social relationships to influence positive outcomes and compel others to action as a key storyteller of our work
  • Deep knowledge of the philanthropic marketplace and history of building strong partnerships within a mission-driven field in New England
  • Excellent problem-solving, operational, and communication skills, comfortable with pivots to harness opportunity to advance our work
  • Intellectual depth, maturity, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, board members, and external partners
  • Can-do attitude, out-of-the-box thinking, good sense of humor, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to IINE’s humanitarian mission to serve immigrants, refugees, and newcomer populations
