POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Finance is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial operations of SEIU Local 509, with additional oversight of certain business operations and limited human resources functions, primarily payroll and benefits administration. Reporting directly to the Treasurer, the Director ensures compliance, accountability, and alignment between organizational resources and strategic priorities.
This is a highly visible position that provides strategic guidance on financial sustainability, internal controls, and compliance while managing critical operational systems. The Director supervises a team of finance professionals, including controllers and support staff, fostering professional growth, collaboration, and high performance. Serving as a trusted advisor to union leadership, the Director exercises independent judgment, safeguards the Local’s assets, oversees operational and financial systems, and coordinates with HR partners to support effective payroll and benefits management, ensuring all systems and practices advance the union’s mission and long-term success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management & Compliance
Oversee dues collection, revenue tracking, and expense recording using accrual accounting.
Safeguard union assets through sound internal controls and compliance measures.
Lead preparation of the annual budget in collaboration with Finance and the Treasurer.
Reconcile accounts monthly and ensure compliance with GAAP and auditing standards.
Coordinate annual audits and ensure timely filing of all required State, Federal, and International Union reports.
Maintain NetSuite accounting integrity, including Chart of Accounts, LM2 codes, projects, and departments.
Prepare and deliver financial reports and analysis for Trustees, Joint Executive Board, and leadership.
Assist the treasurer in managing the financial aspects of employee benefit programs (health & dental insurance and HRA)
Business Operations
Oversee operational systems that support Finance and business functions, including vendor management and IT procurement.
Serve as administrator of the union’s electronic expense reimbursement and spend management platform (Ramp), ensuring timely approvals, compliance with policy, and smooth rollouts to users
Oversee credit card management and integration into NetSuite.
Negotiate and maintain insurance policies (Union Liability, Property, Cyber, Umbrella, etc.).
Manage building lease agreements, vendor contracts, and facilities-related issues.
Administer Gmail and Microsoft platforms, ensuring proper access and security.
Ensure secure storage and record retention of all financial and business documents.
Payroll & HR Oversight
Administer payroll (ADP), including employee setup, reporting, and troubleshooting.
Manage staff pay and benefits administration, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Oversee relationships with outsourced HR partners and the SEIU Benefits Office on employee benefits programs, personnel records, unemployment/PFML claims, and compliance matters.
Collaborate with the Chief of Staff and legal counsel on sensitive personnel and compliance issues as needed.
Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise and support controllers and Finance Department staff, providing coaching, performance management, and opportunities for professional growth.
Foster a collaborative, high-accountability team culture that values accuracy, transparency, and continuous improvement.
In collaboration with Treasurer, oversee compliance with union bylaws, collective bargaining agreements, and fiduciary responsibilities of union officers.
Provide strategic guidance to union leadership on financial projections, financial control best practices, and compliance measures to safeguard union assets & carry out the union’s mission
Serve as liaison with SEIU International on financial and compliance matters.
Partner with staff, auditors, and external vendors to ensure accountability and operational excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Finance required; CPA, MBA, or other advanced credential a plus.
Significant experience in financial management, including budget development, compliance, and audit coordination.
Familiarity with labor union financial compliance requirements preferred (LM-2 filings, IRS Form 990, state-level reporting, DOL & IRS regulations)
Demonstrated success in supervising and developing a finance team.
Experience managing vendor relationships, IT systems procurement, and operational processes to support finance and business functions.
Strong background in NetSuite administration; experience with ADP payroll systems preferred.
High proficiency in Excel, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office.
Proven ability to design and maintain effective internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards.
Strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
Ability to exercise independent judgment, make difficult decisions, and thrive under pressure.
Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
Commitment to working collaboratively in a unionized environment and to the principles and values of the labor movement.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS & LOCATION
This is a full-time position based in Marlborough, MA, with some flexibility for local remote work. The annual compensation for this role is $116,866.80. The position includes a generous benefits package, including but not limited to: 100% employer-paid health and dental insurance, paid time off (personal and sick days), and three weeks of paid vacation to start.
